Case study

Our own iOS app, live on the App Store. Every live game opens an arena where sports fans roast each other for as long as the game lasts. All of it was built here: the iPhone app, the backend behind it, the console that runs it and a podcast feed.

  • The arena screen: AL against NL, three smacks posted, a take being voted up.
  • A pinned take at the top of the arena, crowned Smack Champ.
  • The golden smack card for the arena’s top take, ready to share.

01 The arena

Every live game across the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and MLS opens an arena, from kickoff to the final whistle plus thirty minutes. Fans drop takes and vote them up or down. The funniest rise to Best Smack; the worst age like milk and go to the Hall of Milk for good. Roasting your own team pays a cross-fan bonus.

  • The Best Smack leaderboard for a game.
  • Upcoming arenas: the day’s games, each with its window.
  • The side menu: arenas, receipts, packs and the account.

02 Smacks

Smacks are the currency. Smack Packs sell eight ready-made insults at a time. A golden invite code gives five to every friend who joins and five back. And for anyone who wants to gloat, a take can be pinned to the top of the arena for the whole game.

  • Smack Packs: themed sets of eight insults, from $1.99.
  • The golden invite: a personal code that earns smacks for both sides.

03 Receipts

Each fan carries a receipt: every take they have posted, with its votes, printed in order and shareable. Win an arena and the golden smack gets a card of its own to send to whoever needs to see it. Monthly prize drops keep something on the line.

  • A Smack Talk receipt: a fan’s takes listed like items on a till roll.
  • A monthly prize drop announced over the upcoming arenas.

What we built

  1. The iPhone app

Native, on the App Store, with sign in through Apple or Google.

  2. The backend

Arenas that open and close with the game, the votes, the leaderboards, the receipts and the smacks.

  3. The admin console

The studio’s own console for running the app.

  4. The podcast feed

    Served from the same backend.
